Banks & Currency

The official currency of Italy, including Lecce, is the Euro (€). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in shops, restaurants, and hotels. VISA and Mastercard are generally recognized, whereas American Express and Diners Club cards may not always be accepted. Banks in Lecce operate from Monday to Friday, typically from 08:30 to 13:30. ATMs (“bancomat”) are conveniently located throughout the city and offer 24/7 cash withdrawal services.

Climate

Lecce has a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. In September, temperatures typically range from around 18°C (64°F) in the early morning to approximately 29°C (84°F) in the afternoon. Rainfall is uncommon during this period, but a light jacket is recommended for cooler evenings. Attendees are advised to wear light, breathable clothing and use sun protection during daytime activities. Staying hydrated is also highly recommended.

Insurance

Participants are strongly encouraged to obtain private travel insurance before departure. The ICPEPA-13 organizers and the organizing committee assume no responsibility for personal accidents, loss or damage to personal belongings, or any incidents occurring within the conference venue. A comprehensive travel insurance policy should include coverage for medical treatment, theft or loss of valuables, and unexpected travel disruptions such as flight delays or cancellations. If engaging in outdoor activities beyond the conference, participants should ensure their insurance policy provides adequate coverage.

Shopping

Lecce offers a dynamic shopping scene, featuring a blend of local boutiques, artisan workshops, and larger retail stores. Shops generally operate from 09:00 to 13:00 and reopen from 16:30 to 20:30, although hours may vary. Many tourist-oriented shops, especially those in the historic center, remain open throughout the day. Visitors can find a variety of locally crafted products, including the traditional pasticciotto leccese (a custard-filled pastry), handmade ceramics, premium olive oil, and fine wines from the Salento region. Leather goods and textiles are also popular souvenirs.

Smoking

Italy enforces strict anti-smoking regulations. Smoking is prohibited in all indoor public spaces, including restaurants, cafés, and conference venues. Many establishments provide designated outdoor smoking areas. Attendees are advised to look for designated smoking zones and comply with local regulations.

Tipping

Tipping in Italy is not mandatory but is appreciated for good service. In restaurants, a service charge (coperto) is often included in the bill; however, leaving an additional 5–10% in cash is customary for excellent service. Taxi drivers do not expect tips, though rounding up to the nearest euro is a common practice. Hotel staff, including porters and housekeeping personnel, may also be tipped at the guest’s discretion.
